Why Your Missed Miscarriage is Both Your Problem AND You Solution–According to Chinese Medicine

A missed miscarriage is its own special cruelty. If you aren’t familiar, let me explain. Unlike a typical miscarriage — where bleeding and cramping serve as your physical manifestation that your pregnancy has ended — a missed miscarriage keeps the secret that the pregnancy is over…that is, until your next ultrasound.

On that awful day, conventional medicine will offer you a D&C or misoprostol (medication to MAKE you bleed) and say, “sorry” and “you can try again in 3 months.” They give very little if any reason, solution…support, and for a lot of women, that’s where it ends — NGL, it’s really tough.

But I want to offer you something different.

What Chinese Medicine Sees in a Missed Miscarriage — That Western Medicine Doesn’t

In Chinese medicine, every symptom is seen as information; so in that sense, a missed miscarriage is great information. It’s telling you exactly what your body needs.

One of the most clinically significant patterns I see in women with recurrent pregnancy loss — and especially missed miscarriage — is Blood Stasis. In plain terms: blood stasis is a term used in Chinese medicine to describe stagnant blood that isn’t flowing the way it should be flowing. Think of it like tiny clots in the microcirculation that make the blood sluggish and congested. In most cases, it’s not enough to even register on any bloodwork; but it’s there. The blood in the microcirculation of the uterine lining is what makes the deep connections between you and your baby, as the embryo attaches and “implants.” When the blood is thick and stagnant, the attachment is not strong. It won’t hold. The embryo eventually detaches from the uterine wall. That is the making of a typical miscarriage. A missed miscarriage goes even a step further — the connection is broken, but the blood is so stagnant it doesn’t even flow enough to cause bleeding.

That’s the problem.

And Here’s Why It’s Also the Solution

Here’s the good news — Blood Stasis is highly treatable. Highly. And the same pattern that explains why the miscarriage happened is your roadmap for making sure it doesn’t happen again.

There are specific herbs that don’t just move the blood — they transform it. Less thick, less sticky, more receptive to an embryo trying to attach. And sometimes the blood is thick because it’s running hot — in which case we’re not just moving it, we’re cooling it. The formula changes entirely depending on what’s driving it. That’s the part a supplement off a shelf simply cannot do.

Acupuncture works alongside the herbs — increasing blood flow to the uterus, regulating the nervous system, helping the body remember how to move what’s stuck. Together, they address the root, not just the symptom.

As a master herbalist who has worked with all kinds of pregnancy loss — including recurrent and missed miscarriage — this is my true specialty. I’m not guessing. I’m looking at your blood, your pattern, your history, and building something specific to you. That’s what makes Chinese medicine different. It’s not a protocol. It’s a conversation with your body.

What Happens When Blood Stasis Follows You Into a Pregnancy

Here’s something worth knowing: Blood Stasis doesn’t always cause a miscarriage. Sometimes the pregnancy holds — but the stasis comes along for the ride.

This shows up as subchorionic hematomas — those pockets of blood that collect between the placenta and the uterine wall. It shows up as unexplained clotting, bleeding episodes. Western medicine will monitor it, put you on bed rest, tell you to wait and see. And sometimes it resolves. But from a Chinese medicine perspective, we’re looking at the same root pattern that was there before the pregnancy began — Blood Stasis that was never addressed.

Your pregnancy shouldn’t feel like you’re holding your breath from week six to week twelve, terrified of every trip to the bathroom. The goal is a foundation clean enough, and a uterine environment receptive enough, that you can actually exhale.

What This Means for You

If you’ve had a missed miscarriage — or more than one — your body isn’t broken. It’s communicating. Loudly, clearly, and with a level of specificity that Chinese medicine is very well equipped to hear.

The goal isn’t to get you pregnant faster. The goal is to make sure when you do get pregnant, you stay pregnant. That means clearing Blood Stasis before conception — improving the quality and flow of blood, warming or cooling what needs to be adjusted, and building a uterine environment where an embryo can land and grow.
