Benefits of Acupuncture for Fertility

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) sees fertility imbalances as disruptions in the flow of Qi (energy) and blood within the body. Acupuncture offers numerous benefits for those seeking to improve their fertility.

Frequently Asked Questions

While individual needs vary, we typically recommend starting acupuncture 3 months prior to starting IVF.  Since herbal medicine is a huge part of this practice, we see patients only a couple times per month for acupuncture.  This gives your body adequate time to make the changes that will make the entire process of IVF easier on your body, both physically and mentally.

The best answers to this question are individual, but generally our sessions and herbs help return the body to its natural state of health.  Fertility is what happens naturally, in a body that is functioning optimally.

The most common “risk” for acupuncture itself is minor bruising, but even that is uncommon in our practice.  What is far more concerning is the mental and emotional toll of going through IVF without the proper support in place.  Many of my IVF patient have described acupuncture as being their “saving grace” while they were going through the IVF process.

Most patients find acupuncture to be a relaxing experience with minimal discomfort. The needles used are extremely thin, and any sensation is typically brief. Many people report feeling calm and refreshed after treatments, with some even falling asleep during sessions. Acupuncture needles are minuscule compared to the needles used to adminster the meds required to go through the IVF process.

It’s ideal to begin acupuncture treatments 3-4 months before trying to conceive, whether naturally or through assisted reproductive techniques. This allows time for the acupuncture to regulate your cycle, balance hormones, and improve overall reproductive health. However, it’s never too late to start – we can tailor treatments to your specific timeline and needs.

Yes! I strongly encourage both partners to take charge of their reproductive health during the IVF process.  Acupuncture + herbal medicine can be used to support sperm quality, motility, morphology, and overall reproductive wellness in the male partner.
