  1. 3 Ways to Improve Fertility and Get Pregnant Faster (Backed by What I See in the Clinic)

If you’re reading this at 11pm after another two-week-wait that ended the way it always does, I want you to know — you’re not doing anything wrong. You’ve probably already read every list like this one. So let’s actually go deeper than “eat more greens and drink more water.”

Optimize Your Diet for Fertility — With Intention, Not Just Restriction

Yes, whole foods matter. Folate, omega-3s, antioxidants — leafy greens, avocados, berries, fatty fish — these build the raw material your body needs to make a healthy egg and a receptive uterine lining. Hydration matters too.

But here’s where I’ll push back a little on the standard advice: what you eat matters less than most wellness content suggests, and how consistently you nourish yourself over time matters more. In Chinese medicine, building building good quality blood with acupuncture and herbal medicine is important — think of it not just as the fluid in your veins, but as the nourishing substance that thickens your uterine lining and sustains a pregnancy once implantation has occurred. A woman who “eats clean” for two weeks before her cycle isn’t building Blood. A woman who eats warm, cooked, iron-rich meals consistently for three to four months — closer to the timeline it actually takes to mature an egg — is. (But I digress — the point is, this isn’t a sprint. It’s a slow, steady deposit into a savings account.)

Maintain a Healthy Weight for Fertility — But Don’t Chase a Number

Both underweight and overweight conditions can disrupt ovulation, and yes, a healthcare provider can help you build a plan around this. That part of the standard advice holds up. This is even more relevant if you’ve been diagnosed with PCOS, fibroids, or endometriosis.

What I’d add from years of watching this play out in my clinic: the scale is a blunt instrument. I’ve had patients at a “normal” BMI who weren’t ovulating regularly because of Kidney energy depletion — Kidney in this context referring to the deep constitutional reserves that govern hormonal regulation and reproductive timing, not the organ itself. And I’ve had patients told to lose weight, when what they really needed was to build more reserve, not burn through what little they had. Body weight is a piece of the picture; it’s not the whole picture.

Manage Stress Levels to Boost Fertility — And Understand Why It Actually Matters

Chronic stress disrupting hormonal balance isn’t just wellness-speak — it’s physiologically real. Yoga, meditation, breathwork, counseling — all legitimate tools, and I recommend them regularly.

Here’s the clinical detail that doesn’t usually make it into these lists: stress doesn’t just make conception feel harder — recent research out of Cleveland’s Connor Whole Health and UH Fertility Center (2025) found measurable, clinically meaningful reductions in stress, anxiety, and pain after even a single acupuncture session during IVF. Which tells you something important — the nervous system response to fertility treatment is real enough to show up in patient-reported outcomes after one visit. Stress management isn’t a “nice to have” alongside your fertility plan. It’s part of the plan.

Protect Your Sleep — It’s Doing More Than You Think

This one gets skipped over constantly, and it shouldn’t. Your reproductive hormones — FSH, LH, melatonin — are largely produced and regulated while you sleep. Cut your sleep short and you’re not just tired; you’re interrupting the signaling that tells your ovaries when to develop a follicle and when to ovulate. Research has linked both short sleep (under 6-7 hours) and irregular sleep timing to a longer time to pregnancy, in both women and men—and I believe this is the reason.

There’s also the detox piece. Overnight is when your liver does the bulk of its work clearing used hormones out of circulation — estrogen included. Skimp on sleep and that process backs up, which is part of why chronically under-slept patients often show the estrogen-dominant patterns I see. And melatonin itself isn’t just a sleep hormone — it’s concentrated directly inside your ovarian follicles, where it acts as an antioxidant protecting your eggs from oxidative damage. Poor sleep means less melatonin reaching your ovaries.

In Chinese medicine, this maps almost exactly onto the Liver system’s role in storing Blood and the body’s need for deep Yin (restorative, cooling, building energy) — which is why the hours between 11pm and 3am specifically matter for reproductive repair, not just total hours logged. The most important take away here is don’t underestimate how important sleep it for fertility; and the hours between 11pm-3am are MOST IMPORTANT.  Make sure you are asleep for those hours.

Bonus: Fertility Acupuncture — Dosed Properly

Acupuncture significantly boosts fertility efforts by supporting hormonal balance, improving blood flow to the reproductive organs, and easing stress. What I’d add is this: dose matters more than most people realize. A 2024 meta-analysis of 25 trials and nearly 4,800 women found clinical pregnancy rates of 43.6% with acupuncture versus 33.2% without, and live birth rates of 38.0% versus 28.7% — with the strongest benefit in women who received four or more sessions, not the one or two on around their embryo transfer.

In my clinic, I don’t treat acupuncture as a last-minute add-on. It’s woven through each phase of the cycle. That’s the difference between acupuncture as a checkbox and acupuncture as medicine.
