What causes fertility issues?
Fertility issues can originate in the male or female partner or both. In about one-third of infertility causes, there’s no identifiable reason for a couple’s inability to achieve a viable pregnancy. We love treating ‘unexplained infertility’ with acupuncture. Why? because in Chinese Medicine, there is no such thing as ‘unexplained infertility.’ There is always a root cause. Below are listed some common Western medical reasons for infertility, and in parenthesis, the possible equivalent in TCM:
Female issues leading to infertility:
- PCOS (Kidney deficiency)
- Fibroids (Blood stasis, blood deficiency, cold uterus)
- Endometriosis (Kidney deficiency and cold uterus turning to heat)
- Metabolic Syndrome/Dysfunction (Liver qi depression and stasis)
- Blocked fallopian tubes (Kidney & Spleen qi deficiency leading to fluid pathology).
- Insufficient uterine lining (Blood deficiency and blood stasis)
- High FSH/low AMH (Kidney deficiency, sometimes Liver qi depression)
- Diminished ovarian reserve DOR/Premature Ovarian Failure (Severe kidney and liver qi deficiency)
Male issues leading to infertility:
- Low sperm Count (Kidney or Spleen qi deficiency)
- Morphology issues (Kidney or Spleen qi xu)
- Azoospermia (Severe kidney qi deficiency)
- Erectile dysfunction (Liver qi depression and/or blood deficiency)
- Hormone Imbalances (Liver or Kidney qi deficiency)
Both Men and Women will experience declining fertility as they get older, this is normal. Men’s fertility treatment can offer natural support for anyone over 40 and beyond.
Hackensack Family Acupuncture & Wellness offers natural treatment alternatives to IVF. Traditional Chinese Medicine can restore both men’s fertility and women’s fertility, by treating the root cause. Besides acupuncture, herbs for fertility and supplements are usually part of every treatment plan. This allows us to get the best results in the most timely manner. Furthermore, if you’ve been diagnosed with unexplained infertility, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a great option to help get the answers and remains one of the best ways to increase fertility naturally.
How does acupuncture support fertility?
Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine therapy that involves the insertion of fine needles into specific points (meridians) throughout your body.
The needles trigger the release of endorphins, painkillers that your body produces naturally. Acupuncture techniques also promote deep relaxation in your body to enhance your fertility, but the benefits of acupuncture go far beyond relaxation. Treatment is also beneficial for women trying to conceive a pregnancy through intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in-vitro fertilization (IVF). Many women who have started acupuncture prior to IVF has seen improved results in their egg retrieval. Acupuncture before embryo transfer helps to improve how receptive the endometrial lining is to the embryo. We have seen significantly improved pregnancy rates with acupuncture before embryo transfer (FET).
The Hackensack Family Acupuncture & Wellness providers can insert the needles at different depths to maximize the results of your treatment. They may also manipulate the needles manually or with low currents of electricity to stimulate your body’s natural healing processes.
In addition to acupuncture, the providers can also customize a care plan using other holistic strategies to increase the likelihood of successful conception.
When should I start fertility acupuncture?
The best answer to this question is 3 months before you are planning to start IVF or start trying to conceive (TTC) naturally. The second best answer is, as soon as possible. Our acupuncturists will evaluated your particular case, and make a treatment plan for you, based on TCM principles.
Sometimes patients choose to have just 2 acupuncture sessions, one just before and another just after their FET . This works sometimes, when a little extra energy is needed to bring about conception.
